Meet Bonni,
Course Creator and Doula
Hi, I'm Bonni Berger, a certified postpartum doula and lactation counselor. For years, I've had the privilege of supporting families during those precious (and sometimes overwhelming!) early days and weeks with a new baby. Whether families grow through pregnancy, adoption, or surrogacy, I'm here to help them navigate this beautiful transition with confidence and joy.
Now, I'm excited to share what I've learned with youâthe grandparents who will play such an important role in your grandchild's life.
What's Changed Since You Were a Parent
Best practices for postpartum and newborn care have shifted since the '90s. We always do the best we can with what we know in the moment, and today's research just gives us new tools to work with. A few examples:
- Sleep position: Then, stomach or side sleeping was common. Now, back only, every sleep, every time.
- Crib safety: Then, bumpers, blankets, and stuffed animals were normal. Now, a bare crib: fitted sheet only, nothing else.
- Car seats: Then, forward-facing around age 1. Now, rear-facing as long as the seat allows, often age 2 or later.
- Diapers: Then, constantly guessing and checking for a wet diaper. Now, disposable diapers have a line on the outside that changes from yellow to blue, indicating when wet.
